We Witness
My husband and I got married the day before Loving Day, June 11th, 2011 . Because he is not from the US, getting married was a long and expensive process. We had a pretty straightforward partnering and yet, in the eyes of the law, it was “complicated.”
Being in a cross-cultural, multi-lingual, bi-racial relationship has been a formative part of my adult years. There are moments where it feels so hard and I and see why we make up only 4% of couples in the U.S.. There other moments where it feels like our partnership is powerful beyond measure- alchemizing the trauma, fear, disempowerment, guilt, and greed, that shaped the lives of our ancestors and bringing healing to both lineages.
One of the things that has held us steady in all the ups and downs are the witnesses- the friends and family who have watched us come together and helped bring us back to ourselves and each other when we forget.
This month’s print is called We Witness. It is a shout out to the people who are there supporting both the important moments and the banal. The piece is a celebration of those who help us find our way when the systems at play feel like they are trying to break us.
So yes, I picked June as the month to release this print for the very personal reasons above, but also because it’s Pride month! I decided to depict a same gender couple because I have been witness to so many friends who have had their own versions of the rollercoaster and struggle to get married due to the bogus laws restricting it. I have been witness to the ways these laws strain friends’ relationships, but I’ve also seen the deep resilience and conviction that has come forth.
We Witness is a limited edition print of just 30 prints. They are each hand printed on lavender paper and individually signed and numbered. This print makes a very special wedding gift or gift for someone who helps makes those special celebrations happen- or maybe a gift for yourself ;-)
There is so much hate being vocalized loudly out in the world- let’s make space for more expressions of love.
And here’s to witnessing each other through the setbacks, and disappointments, joy and celebration. Here’s to love,
Jen
P.S. If you’re interested in a customized versions of this image depicting your celebration or for an extra special gift reach out and let’s discuss- I have a just a few spots open in 2026 for customized work.
P.P.S. Here’s a rare pic from our wedding day- 2011
